Build Automation In-House or Hire It Out?

TL;DR

Agencies with a technically capable team member can absolutely build their own automations. The real question isn't capability, it's opportunity cost - whether that person's time is better spent on client work or on maintaining internal tooling, and who owns it when they eventually leave.

Two paths comparing an in-house automation with a cracked, unmaintained workflow against a hired-out automation that stays intact

Most agencies have at least one person who could build automations in-house - someone comfortable with ClickUp's automation panel, maybe a bit of Zapier or a script here and there. That's real capability. It doesn't automatically make it the right call.

The honest question isn't "can we"

Almost any technically inclined team member can wire up a workflow that works today. The harder question is what that person isn't doing while they're building and maintaining it, and whether that tradeoff is actually worth it once you account for the time.

What gets missed in the "we can DIY this" calculation

A workflow built once and left alone tends to break quietly when a tool updates its API, a field gets renamed, or an edge case nobody planned for shows up. Someone has to notice, and someone has to fix it. If that someone is also your best account manager, the automation is now competing with client work for their attention indefinitely.

Where hiring it out actually wins

Hiring out makes the most sense when the person who'd otherwise build it is more valuable doing client-facing work, or when the automation needs to reach across multiple tools in ways that go past a quick native setup - the same territory covered in ClickUp automations vs. custom workflow adapters.

Where building in-house still makes sense

If the automation is simple, contained to one tool, and someone already has slack in their week to own it long-term, in-house is often the right call - not everything needs outside help. For anything that's outgrown that, see how custom workflow adapters work as the alternative.
